It's rare for a single character to jump from niche collector shelves to genuine global phenomenon, but that's exactly what's happened with Labubu over the past few years. So what actually explains the craze?
Part of it is the design itself: a mix of mischievous and endearing that doesn't quite look like anything else on the shelf. Labubu doesn't try to be conventionally cute β pieces like the CryBaby Courage Keychain and the Let's Checkmate Hanging Charm show off the jagged smile and wide eyes that give the character a personality that feels distinct the moment you see it.
Part of it is the blind box format, which turns a simple purchase into a small event. Unboxing videos and "which one did I get" posts spread naturally across social media, and every reveal doubles as free advertising created by the collectors themselves.
And part of it is community. Trading duplicates, hunting for the secret figure, comparing display shelves online β collecting Labubu was never really a solo hobby, and that shared excitement is a big part of why it keeps growing.
Trends come and go, but a character this specific, backed by a community this active, tends to stick around a lot longer than the average fad.
